Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I bought this to check the batteries in my cars and it works great. No more going to the auto stores to have the battery, alternator and charging system checked. This tester does it all and very easy to operate. The price is great as well. I’m very satisfied.”
Customer Review: “Amazing for the price. You won’t be disappointed! Works straight out of the box, with no batteries or charging needed since it’s powered directly from the car.The instructions aren’t the best, so for those who might not know: connect it to the car by attaching the Positive (red) clamp to the positive terminal of the car battery first, then connect the Negative (black) clamp to the negative terminal on the battery. It can test batteries both in and out of the car.The device will power on once connected, and you get three options for testing the battery with step-by-step instructions. The three options are Battery Test, Cranking Test, and Charging Test. The Battery Test will determine the health of a battery, the Cranking Test will measure the battery’s ability to start the engine, and the Charging Test will measure the voltage of the battery while the vehicle is running to determine if the battery and alternator are working. If you think you have a bad alternator, use this device first and run through the tests. It provides straightforward results (as shown in the photo) that tell you if the battery is good, needs to be replaced, or if the alternator has no output.Couldn’t recommend this device enough”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I received a used BT960. There was a printout from two battery tests still on the printer and additional print rolls beyond what is advertised. The box was sealed before opening, but it was clear that this item was returned and repackaged. I was given a discount to keep it and I chose to do so to avoid the hassle or returning and waiting for a replacement. I was assured that warranty will be honored as if new and I will conduct a full function check soon.”
Customer Review: “Decent tool idea with solid features listed but doesn’t work quite right. Allows for multiple battery types between agm flooded and so on took a battery and tested in 3 different modes it showed the identical result each time regardless. Compared with 3 other testers snap on, top don, and foxwell… those 3 all read within 1-3 amps of each other show nearly the same resistance measurements and shifted by battery types to read a different result when in different modes once again all matching. This seems to indicate that this tester only runs a single test profile regardless of which battery type is selected for the testing mode.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “Note: This is NOT a carbon pile tester of old but a great tool to perform a quick check. And it is also much lighter, convenient and more compact than Ol Smokey.I found this works best when directly connected to the battery vs the “access nipples” under the hood on my 2024 Audi A5 when testing for load. My battery in is in the trunk under the spare tire. When tested from the access points, the battery tested low but when directly connected, showed up a more believable 55% on the OEM battery. (Note I live in Florida and the heat takes a toll, so I have “learned” to test periodically.) On my bride’s Ford Escape, you have to hold your tongue right to get good connections as the battery is under the cowl and I didn’t feel like removing the hold downs to pry it out to get a better hands free connection but on that car, it showed a 80% on a 2 yr old Interstate ostensibly made for the hot climate. The other test functions are viable with the most interesting to me the ac ripple test (anyone who owned a 7th gen maxima can appreciate that early warning as those OEM alternators failed regularly every 100,000 to 150,000 miles with High Ripple (don\’t know if that issue still exists with their diode packs of today but it ran very hot under the hood and those diodes were NOT mil-spec!! 🙂 )I also appreciated the “dumb guy” indicators when you didn\’t ensure a good connection. Really helped with those “DOH!” moments. The voltage reading was spot on when compared to my fluke and old Simpson 260b.Nice Job.”
Customer Review: “I just installed a brand new car battery and checked it with the TOPDON BT100. It showed the battery was bad, which probably saved me from being stranded. The battery was under warranty, so I got a new replacement. The tester is very easy to use and gives clear results. I especially like that it’s a true 3 in 1 tool: it tests battery health, checks the engine crank, and measures the charging system. Now I can conveniently check my battery anytime without going to AutoZone or O’Reilly Auto Parts. This is a great value and definitely worth keeping in the car.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “As winter is quickly approaching and car batteries are failing, I figured this was a good time to try a new battery tester. I have an old style toaster which does a great job of putting a load on a battery, but the toaster has its limitations. That’s where I found the BT500 is a great addition. I found it easy and intuitive to learn. I also appreciate the printed manual which clearly explains the operational modes.I tested multiple car, motorcycle and marine batteries and I found it to be quite accurate. By sculling through the display you can quickly perform a capacity check, then a cranking test and finally a charging test. Input the capacity of the battery I.e. 700 CCA and start the vehicle and it will show you the result.Another nice feature of the charging test is using the waveform option to monitor charging rates and starting voltage. The test results can also be saved and printed. Finally you can update the software with future upgrades.Over all I found it to be a great addition to my tool box.”
Customer Review: “This is a great tool to have in your bag to quickly diagnose the state of your battery which I have used on multiples cars. Quality battery clamps with alligator teeth on one side for good grip and a good length cable. There is even a quick test button, one click to instantly get a reading on your battery. This is super handy to grab a quick state of health on your battery and the feature I use most of the time. The display is very bright and easy to read at most angles. In addition it has an LED indicator for a quick visual of Good (green), Charge (yellow), or Poor (red). In addition you can go into the vehicle mode to do additional tests such as Battery test, Cranking test, and Charging test. Just follow the steps on the screen and it easily walks you through the process. The Battery test will give you detailed information on the State of health as well as the State of charge. In addition it will show you current voltage as well as the cold cranking amps compared to the factory standard on your battery. The results are given as to whether the battery is good, good but needs charging, replace, bad cell, or charge retest. Glad I had this tool because it let me know that my truck battery is failing and says replace, which keeps me prepared! The Cranking test will show you detailed data when you crank the car following the prompt but mostly you are looking for Normal or Low for the result. The Charging test is a little hard depending on your battery placement since you have to rev the engine but I was able to do it by myself with one of my cars.I do not have a motor cycle so was not able to test that feature but I am sure it will be helpful to those where that is a part of their fleet. You can do both in vehicle and out is vehicle battery testing which is helpful. The waveform feature gives you a graph display of visual dips in the ignition and charging states as well as offering a quick button for this feature as well.Additional features that come with this device are system screen test and button test as well as a easy to read manual. Provides easy review of recent battery test and wave form data as well as printing the results if maybe you need to give it to a neighbor. Plus it gives you a usb port for updating the software on the unit for feature improvements. Great Tool to prevent you from not being aware of a failing battery and leaving yourself stranded. The is also a Great company with exceptional support and quick to get back to you if you have any issues or need help! Highly recommend!!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How often should I test my car battery?
A: It’s generally a good idea to test your car battery at least twice a year, ideally before the start of extreme weather seasons (e.g., before winter and summer). If your vehicle is older, you frequently take short trips, or you notice any signs of slow cranking, you might want to test it more often, perhaps once a month.
Q: Can a car battery tester tell me if my alternator is bad?
A: Yes, many modern car battery testers include a “charging system test” or “alternator test” function. This test typically checks the voltage output of your alternator while the engine is running. If the voltage is too low or too high, it can indicate a problem with your alternator or voltage regulator, helping you pinpoint the issue beyond just the battery.
Q: What is CCA, and why is it important for a battery tester?
A: CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps. It’s a rating used to define a battery’s ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. A higher CCA rating means more starting power. A good battery tester will measure the actual CCA of your battery and compare it to the manufacturer’s specified CCA, giving you a clear indication of how well your battery can perform under load, especially when starting the engine.
Q: Do I need to remove the battery from my car to test it?
A: Most modern car battery testers are designed to perform accurate tests with the battery still installed in the vehicle. They simply connect to the battery terminals. Some advanced models also offer an “out-of-vehicle” test mode for batteries that have been removed, which can be useful for testing spare batteries or those from other equipment.
Q: Are digital battery testers more accurate than traditional load testers?
A: Both digital conductance testers and traditional carbon pile load testers can be accurate, but they work differently. Digital testers measure internal resistance and use algorithms to infer battery health, which is fast and non-invasive. Traditional load testers apply a heavy electrical load directly to the battery, mimicking engine cranking, which can be very definitive. Many experts consider a good digital tester to be equally, if not more, convenient and accurate for general diagnostics, while a load tester provides a more “real-world” test of cranking ability. For the average user, digital testers offer a safer and faster way to get reliable readings.
