But as advertised on chamberlain website you can cut the metallic rails and the belt (but you need to buy a kit at $5 on chamberlain website to fix it) to the right size. I ended up cutting 9” of the rail and 18” of the belt.The assembly was super simple and the installation easy. I installed the first one with my wife and did not even need her for the second one. And I am not a DIY person.The opener is great. Very quiet. And the motion detection works very well. The LED lighting is amazing. Customer Review: “I needed to get a new unit since there seemed to be something wrong with the original Genie overhead screw type unit. It’s been 17 years in service, so it lived a good, well-serviced life. Even with regular maintenance it finally gave it up. Wanted to clean up the look and decided that although the jackshaft unit was more expensive, I loved the idea that it could be hooked into the home wireless system, as well as having an auto close feature. It’s a beefy unit and the emergency battery backup in case of a power loss is a nice added plus.Biggest plus in my opinion is the fact that it’s MUCH quieter than the Genie screw drive, and it wasn’t all that noisy. Sometimes the dog doesn’t even realize when the door opens. With the old unit, anyone in the house could hear the door open.Instructions were simple enough to follow. Once familiarized with what goes where, installation was fairly easy and straightforward. It helps to be a bit mechanically inclined, but there’s also plenty of Youtube videos you can watch to get the hang of how to install. I took my time and carefully installed and double checked my work as I went. Took me a day and a half, including removing the old system. Now the area above the garage door is neater and nothing hanging down in the center between the cars. The LED light is now taking the place of where the old unit was, and love the added adjustable features of this unit. Auto time to close, auto sensing LED light comes on hands free and with timed auto shutoff once you leave the area.With the iPhone or Android app, you can operate the unit with your phone, and I added a video camera as well to be able to see what’s going on inside the garage any time I want. I can also check the open/close log to see when/if the door was open or closed while away. Oh, and another neat idea was the closing lock pin that automatically latches and opens when the door is operated, locking the travel to less than a foot once closed in case someone tries to manually pull the door open. It didn’t have a built in camera but reality sank in that I already had a garage camera so why did I need another camera?I moved in to a new house and the Craftsman opener sensors were not working reliably and I only had one opener.My last Opener at my previous residence was the Ryobi GDO. Loved it because it had all kinds of attachments that were truly useful. Didn’t care for the app because sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t.I was convinced I was going to buy a Chamberlain and found one with everything though it was a bit pricey but there were some little things I didn’t like after reading other’s review about the sensor design and other things.So I looked at Genie. The sensors are well designed. Solid actually, better than any I have ever had historically. The app works really well. The opener is super quiet. It took several days of greasing the garage door rollers (not related to the opener) so I could notice how quiet it actually was. The install was super simple and straightforward but most garage door openers are pretty easy to install, I’ve personally installed maybe 8-10 openers in my life. But they make it simpler (which I didn’t notice) by color coding the parts bags to the installation steps. Nice touch if you never installed a opener before as some parts can look similar.I installed LED bulbs and the backup battery option it came with was pretty easy to install. I really wanted a backup battery. It was an important requirement for me as it has come in handy several times in the past.The motor is plenty strong and the belt drive super quiet.It connected to my wifi very easily.I don’t use the remotes or the keypad because of Homelink and the phone app.I do like the big glowing (red) wall mount button as it’s difficult to miss or accidentally hit a different button. The reason I include that information is to say that if you already have a genie and some of the parts installed (safety laser, for example), IT IS NOT NECESSARY to install everything from this device (unless you want everything new of course).The instructions overall are good, nicely color coded along with the packages of parts so that you make sure you are installing the right stuff. DON\’T open all the bags and mix up the pieces because you will defeat the purpose of the organized instructions. You should be aware that multiple people wrote the instructions, meaning some are easier to follow than others. Trust me – I write procedures for a living.If you are reading some of the negative reviews about how difficult it was to connect wirelessly, or how impossible it is to reach customer service, keep reading!It took us about 8 hours of messing around with the various wireless settings to get this to connect reliably to our home internet. We would get it connected through the app, then after trying to control the door (open or close one time), we got a message saying “unable to determine status,” so the back end didn\’t know whether the door was opened or closed. We had to control through the wall button to close it. Then we would delete the app, reconnect to home internet, and then had the same result.I called Genie customer service first thing on a Monday morning – I was able to get through right away. It turns out, BOTH devices needed to have the FIRMWARE upgraded. (If you are unaware, firmware is what makes peripherals run. Sometimes there are new versions released which are necessary to align with related technologies or to fix bugs). Both our router and WAP had new firmware to solve bug fixes which included unexpected connectivity issues. SO after updating the firmware on both devices, I reconnected the Genie garage door opener through the mobile app and VOILA! problem solved.We personally own our router and WAP – so I had to work through the manufacturers website instructions to update the firmware. If you have equipment provided by your ISP, you should call to ask how to upgrade the firmware, then attempt the wireless connection to the Genie before blaming this product and sending it back.I hope this was helpful!”

Customer Review: “Just installed today actually, but what a difference from the old chain Chamberlain .5 HP LiftMaster I had before that was running on 13 years. It just wouldn’t hardly lift my 7’H by 18’W insulated door; can’t believe they even used a .5 HP opener for it to begin with. First time installing an opener and it was actually very easy and clean. Of course I had one already up, so that helped, so just took the old one down and had the opener up in around 1 hour from the start. The part that took the longest was using the preexisting wiring for the wall control and sensors. They used old Cat5 ethernet cable and that is just horrible because it gets brittle and breaks easy after a while. Finally got it all hooked up though and man this thing is just quiet. Only thing that makes noise is the door.I didn’t need all the features of this, but I needed a bigger motor (1 1/4 HP), so that’s the only reason why I ended up with a WiFi and battery backup opener. It does not disappoint though and is well worth it.-The WiFi MyQ app is nice and easy to use. Setup alerts to tell me if the door opens at certain times (like when I’m at work) or if it left open for a certain amount of time at anytime. Can open and close it manually from your phone from anywhere.-The battery backup is a nice feature, although I’m not sure what’ll happen when hte battery goes bad and I don’t want to replace it. I assume the door will still work (I HOPE), because the backup is not a necessity. I tested it and it worked great when power was unplugged. It goes up and down a lot slower (to conserve the battery) and beeps like a dump truck backing up.-Belt driven is the way to go now. Lifetime warranty, can’t go wrong. I’m skeptical about the rubber getting dried out like tires, but we’ll see. Lifetime warranty like I said. No greasy and oily chain, the belt is nice and clean; the motor sprocket comes with some grease on it. Just super quiet.Overall; you can almost hear the efficiency of this opener. lol I hope it lasts a long time!”

Customer Review: “I wasn’t sure how much work was involved to replace an existing Liftmaster belt drive, which I believe was 10 years old. It was a bit noisy, but had other issues, like it wouldn’t auto-reverse on contact, so the door would continue to close onto whatever was under it. In short, it turned out all I needed to do was replace the main unit and the door remote (old one was not compatible). The existing belt and infrastructure was compatible. So I can return the 8\’ extension kit I bought needlessly. I even re-used the existing door sensors, but may try replacing later depending on how it performs in bright sunlight (which often prevents the door from closing). I also want to raise the sensors from the recommended 6″ off the floor so instead it is at least as high as the bottom of the vehicle so the door won\’t close on top of a car if the tires are not in the path of the light beam.So this new one is a bit less noisy than the old Liftmaster belt drive unit. Although the door squeaks a little, I am surprised by how quieter the operation is now. Since I have a bedroom directly over the garage, quieter has real benefits when someone is sleeping.Anyway, I have the MyQ app which I can use to open/close remotely and check status and receive notifications. You only need to pay if you want to integrate with things like HomeKit or Alexa, but otherwise you have free access to their native app. All these people whining like it\’s the end of the world to pay $1 a month for the integrations should be ignored (unless you are one of them). I\’d like the HomeKit integration for free so I could use Siri to check status, but can easily live without it for now.The one thing to consider is how to place the new unit to achieve the correct tension on the existing belt, which has to be disassembled the existing belt if re-used so you can remove/install the main unit. When you look at the provided new belt, you will see that the spring is under tension and is 1″ long. Once the new belt gets tightened, then the spring snaps off the groove and expands to 1 1/4″. So that is the length you want to achieve if you are re-using an already used spring/belt, because you won\’t be able to re-compress it to 1″. Figuring out how all this worked took some time, so it would have been easier to watch a video.The other thing to know that may save you time is that, once you install and tension the belt, the start/stop position is likely not going to coincide with the points you need. I don\’t believe it matters–at that point, you just go to the main unit and follow the instructions to set the start and stop points. I had assumed the sliding trolley needed to be at a certain location to begin the process, but in retrospect it didn\’t matter.So now I\’m very happy, as I can finally get remote control of the opener and receive notifications when the door is opened. Notifications are be either push (not SMS) and/or email. The WiFi setup and app setup worked very well for me, so I consider it impressive that a traditional hardware oriented garage door company actually got the WiFi and software well. Of note is the warning on the package telling you to ensure you have appropriate WiFi strength in the garage. For me, I have one of my mesh routers in the garage. If you have a weak signal in the garage, consider moving your router or join 2018 and buy a mesh router to ease your dead spot problems. The app also contains a full history of openings, and upon opening will tell you how many minutes or hours it has been in its present state. I\’m sure over time that feature will prove useful to figure how when something happened.The best feature is that you can set a time to auto close your door. So if you are normally in the house by 8PM, you can set a schedule to have the door close at 10PM every or any day, so that in the event you forget to close your door, you won\’t leave it open all night. You can always add a second one for later to catch any instances where you may have left it open after the 10PM check. When you use the app to close the door, be forewarned that the unit will issue a loud warning so that anyone in the garage understands the door will begin closing (within maybe 15 seconds or so). I think the only risk is if you have your car straddling the sensors, so they can\’t detect the tires because they are too low.If it is not obvious, it is possible to use this app to let in friends or extended family through your garage by opening your door remotely through the app. Of course, that presumes you leave the door to your house unlocked. Anyway, that can be a huge convenience feature when you need it occasionally.Update: After a couple of months of use, this has worked flawlessly for me.”
