Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “This is a very specialized tool and there are probably several other types of saw for the average do it yourselfer/homeowner to buy before this one. That being said, it’s a fantastic tool for cutting all manner of narrow and dense materials such as piping (Metal or PVC), re-bar, unistrut, channel, fence posts, etc. There is plenty of power and the blade has plenty of speed options with the built in speed dial. Battery life, in my experience, has been more than adequate for the tasks I’ve used it for. I don’t know for how long or how many cuts the battery will last for because the jobs I’ve done only require a few cuts for short periods and I’ve never depleted a battery. Blade changes are simple though you might want to pick up a spare blade or two if your local hardware store doesn’t carry them. Blades are plentiful here on Amazon.About the only downside I see with this tool is the weight. The weight shows the quality of materials used in the saw but it also makes using the saw a hassle for long periods or for awkward positions such as overhead. I feel the better build quality using heavy materials trumps lighter weight materials though.”

Customer Review: “What a Killer saw. As with all of the makita LXT tools, this one does not fail to impress. Unlike the other brands, this has a very wide range of variable speed. Cutting through 1/4” plate steel I can not get the motor to stall or even slow. The stock blade is razor sharp, and hard a a coffin nail, however there is a noticeable “Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chuck” as the welded section of the band passes by… though it has no effect on the cut, it can be a somewhat obnoxious noise. The saw is very loud… from both the brushes… and the large amount of gearing it has.Though this is a full size bandsaw, the weight is incredibly low, compared to the DeWalt or Milwaukee… It would be interesting if they made this again with a brushless motor…. but until this, I have zero complaints with this unit…. EXCEPT!There is a Safety switch that can lock the trigger from being depressed. Just like a gun safety. I have made a small mount to turn this into a Vertical band saw. It would be GREAT, if the trigger lock, could lock the trigger off…. OR ON. That way you can turn the saw permanently on…. But some tom foolery in the handle… you can make this happen.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I pulled the saw out of the box and installed the blade, which was easy. Then I tried cutting 1/4 steel and it cut it like butter. I purchased a dewalt chop saw for this job but it really didn’t work at all and I even purchased an expensive blade for it but it would not cut it. I cut 4 cuts through 4” x 1/4” steel in probably less than 5 minutes. This saw is a beast! I would definitely recommend it. I don’t know how long it will last but I don’t cut metal often so I’m guessing this will be something I have for a long time. I’m extremely happy with the purchase and the price.”

Customer Review: “1. The person who thought they needed to cut off the handle for the angle adjustment did not realize that its a spring loaded handle that you can just simply pull up and move out of the way after tightening the bolt.2. It’s clearly a simple and inexpensive solution, but it works real well. I only have 2 projects with a lot of aluminum profiles to cut – and this is a HUGE time saver while also being very accurate for the cuts.3. This is not a portable – battery operated tool4. it is annoying that the power cord is in the front as well that the saw cuts towards the user (front) It would have been a whole lot better if the cord was in the rear and if it would cut the opposite direction (pressure of the cut away from the user and flush to the back plate. For the money – all is great. It works very effectively for incidental use, where purchasing a more “professional” system would not make sense”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “i had just recently gotten a mill an lathe to learn with an the fist big leason i learned was cutting steel with a hack saw is a pain in the ass so i got online an found horizontal bandsaw looked like the best option for what im working with but the prices was more than i was willing to pay then i stumbled across the wen bandsaw which was the same brand as the mill i recently gotten an from my experience i had with the mill i figured id take a chance on the saw an for it to be so much cheaper than other saws with the same cut capacity i was alittle worried what i would end up with but after getting it an using it to cut a few old hitches i had, 1.25″ square it cut through in less than a might an i tried to use it to cut through a head off a 2.2liter gm motor so it was aluminum but it was able to get half way through on both sides leaving about an inch in the middle for me to finish getting through with the hack saw so its able to cut more than i expected so im very happy with it. i read alot of comments in the reviews saying the blade that it comes with isn’t the best but with the little use i have on it now it doesnt look to have any wear or show signs of dulling so keep that in mind if u do pick this up, u might want to invest into blades from a different brands but as of right now im extremely happy even if the blade it came with is crap in the long run, its going to save me so much energy an time its well worth the money, only wish i could buy a base that would let me use it like a miter saw. oh an it is alittle heavy but thats not really a bad thing in my opinion but others did complain about it so if u work with it daily an make a living doing so then theres probably better options, this is the only tool like this ive ever owned or gotten to use so i dont know what the standards are to make it something that u would want to use daily but it does have a speed control 1 to 6 each number having a click as u come to it and theres also a light that can be turned on an off by a switch which i didnt notice at first an was glad to see once i found it but was surprised it wasn’t just tied into the trigger but again i dont use something like this daily so that might be nice to have when working with alot but the down side to what i seen was very minimum adjustments for the belt or at least where i expected it to be, but if something happens an the blade doesnt run straight an true causing it to walk off the wheels i dont see any way of being able to adjust that, that might not be something they come with an the geometry of the tool might be all thats required to keep the blade running straight but i assumed there would be something that would let u adjust that if it was an issue. i had no issue with getting the blade on an tightened an it ran straight without issue so that may be something i was expecting when its not really a thing but that is the only down side i could find in the short time ive used it that might cause someone to not to want to buy this but if your someone who is just buying one to use around the house or for a hobby its perfect especially for the price its hard to beat. over time if anything drastic happens with it, i’ll come back and update the review an hopefully i’ll have some pictures to show but as of now, its one of my new favorite tools. working on a miter base for it now an if i cna manage to make something that works an is easy to recreate i’ll try to share that as well cause that is one thing i wish i could find for it is a miter base but so far what ive found is more expensive than the next one up from this one that comes with a base so id just buy that an have 2 saws and a base for less than buying one of the bases i have seen for sell so hopefully i can pull off something that others can manage too.”

Customer Review: “I was in construction for over 40 years and have used portable band saws to many times to count. Probably thousands of times. The saw is well made. A little heavy but at 73, a lot of things are heavy now. I like having two speeds. I use the slower speed for more precise cuts and the faster setting to get the job done. If you don’t already know, when you are through using the saw, be sure to take the tension off the blade. Doing this will prolong the life of the blade and saw. At my age, I’ll probably never need to buy another saw. Will it last on a construction site? Probably not. You probably know what I mean. But for around the house or small shop, it’s a winner. I would recommend this saw to friends and family.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Fantastic tool. Very lightweight. Easy to use. Fast charging battery. Great for cutting plumbing pipe. And it’s also very cute.”

Customer Review: “I am an electrician and I can’t say enough good things about this bandsaw. It is light enough to cut with on hand and can flush cut against the wall. I went back and forth before purchasing between this (at the time I had never used one) and the Stout bandsaw (which I’ve used often). Milwaukee put the Stout to shame. Battery life is way longer, can go a couple days of roughing on one battery.(so far). Also has a light so its easy to see your cut lines. And the flush cut option, well the first time you need to use it, you’ll be glad you have this saw. My only complaint is the price. At $400.00, its expensive. I got mine for $360 on amazon with free shipping so you gotta watch for the deals. Most retails stores by my house were in the $400’s as well. Make sure to order some blades, if you’re gonna cut conduit. The factory one isn’t made for that. But again seek out a deal…3 for $20.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Portable Band Saw

Essential Factors We Consider

When you’re in the market for the best portable band saw, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options. We focused on a few key areas that really make a difference. First, cutting capacity is crucial – how big of a pipe or piece of metal can it handle? A deeper cut means more versatility. Next, consider the motor power and speed settings. A strong motor with variable speed allows for clean, efficient cuts across different materials without bogging down. Ergonomics and weight are also super important, especially for those long days on the job; a lighter, well-balanced saw reduces fatigue and makes precise cuts easier. Finally, blade changing mechanisms and overall durability are non-negotiables for a tool you’ll rely on daily. For professionals who are always moving from one site to another, considering how to safely transport your tools, including perhaps looking into the best truck bed covers, can be a practical consideration.

Budget Planning

Investing in a quality portable band saw is an investment in your efficiency and safety. While it might be tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that higher-quality tools often come with better performance, durability, and safety features. Cordless models, especially complete kits with batteries and chargers, tend to be more expensive upfront but offer unmatched convenience and mobility. Corded versions are generally more budget-friendly and provide continuous power. Always consider the long-term value, including replacement blade costs and potential future battery investments, particularly if you are also in the market for something like a portable jump starter, where battery compatibility might be a consideration. It’s about finding the sweet spot between your immediate needs and your wallet.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best portable band saw really boils down to your specific needs and how you plan to use it. If you’re a professional constantly on the move, a high-performance cordless model like the Makita or Milwaukee might be worth the investment for its freedom and power. For shop-based work or less frequent heavy-duty cuts, a robust corded option like the VEVOR or WEN could be your perfect match, offering great capacity and power at a more accessible price. Ultimately, any of these top picks will significantly upgrade your cutting capabilities, delivering cleaner, faster, and safer results than traditional methods. Remember, the right tool doesn’t just get the job done; it makes the job easier and more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the main advantage of a portable band saw over other cutting tools?

A: The main advantage of a portable band saw is its ability to make clean, virtually spark-free cuts through metal and other materials with precision and speed, all in a handheld, mobile package. This is particularly useful in tight spaces or when working with installed materials, where angle grinders produce sparks and chop saws are too bulky.

Q: Can I cut wood with a portable band saw?

A: While primarily designed for metal, many portable band saws can indeed cut wood, especially those with variable speed settings. However, you’ll need to use a blade specifically designed for wood to get the best results and ensure safety. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Q: How often do I need to change the blade on a portable band saw?

A: The frequency of blade changes depends on the material you’re cutting, the blade type, and how often you use the saw. Cutting harder metals will dull a blade faster. It’s important to change the blade as soon as you notice a decrease in cutting efficiency or quality, or visible damage to the teeth, to maintain optimal performance and safety.

Q: Are cordless portable band saws as powerful as corded ones?

A: Modern cordless portable band saws, especially those using 18V or 20V battery platforms, offer impressive power that rivals many corded models for typical applications. While corded saws provide continuous power without battery limitations, cordless technology has advanced significantly, making battery-powered options highly viable and convenient for most professional tasks.

Q: What safety precautions should I take when using a portable band saw?

A: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves. Ensure your workpiece is securely clamped. Keep hands clear of the blade path and be aware of your surroundings. Read the instruction manual thoroughly before operation for specific safety guidelines for your model.

There you have it – our top picks for the best portable band saw, carefully reviewed to help you make an informed decision. Each of these models brings something unique to the table, from robust power to exceptional portability. We hope this guide helps you find the perfect tool to tackle your projects with confidence and precision. Happy cutting!
