Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Much better than I thought, with a few exceptions. It had everything, and extra bolts for everything. My package was perfectly intact. Modifying this to fold up would be pretty easy. Just build it that way to start. I will add a pin in lieu of a bolt on the brace and trim back the bottom flange on the vertical piece and it will fold up nicely. The welds on the platform sides where the bend’s are pretty terrible. The welded two pieces together instead of just cutting the flanges, bending the web, and welding each flange top and bottom. (I’m a structural engineer and a novice fabricator/welder.) I’m going to touch this up. Anywhere where a bolt/nut connects through the thinner steel, I added washers. If I did it again, I’d add a fender washers to bolt heads and nuts at thin steel connections to stiffen the thin steel. That would increase durability. Quality wheels and very sturdy. The way this fails is that since I can’t fold it up, some kid will end up jumping up on it to use as a seat, and the platform is not that tough. With 30 min. of modification (welding, fender washers, added pin and trimming flange), this would be all I need for medium home/ranch/shop mechanicing. If I spent all day every day on one, I’d build a cushier pad. I’m glad I spent half on this one, because mods are easy. I’m 6′-3″, 210 lbs and it more than sturdy enough.”

Customer Review: “Got this to save my back since I had a big job to do over my Ram 3500 dually 6.7L diesel engine to install a Banks Monster Ram which took about 12 to 15 hours to complete. This creeper was very steady and stable and definitely save my Back. No back pain after working over my engine bay for 2 days. Definitely a back saver! On delivery and unboxing the assembly was pretty straigh forward and didn’t take long at all tightening all the bolts and nuts with my Milwaukee cordless ratchet.1 minor draw back only because the screws they give you to install the cushion to the top of the creeper are to small and pulled out within 1 hour of 1st use. I installed some bigger 5/16 head short screws i had so no big deal and the cushion was secure in place for the rest of my repairs. Nice creeper for the price and have 1 more job on my lifted Jeep to use it on to update the oil cooler housing. I recommend it, it worked excellent for me and the cushion platform height adjustment makes it versatile to use on many engine jobs.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Awesome! Easy to use, easy to change from seat to laying. Comfortable!! Good value and good height especially for working on cars.”

Customer Review: “So I realize there are a ton of negative reviews on here that say this is poorly made, breaks easily, wheels break/come off, cover comes ripped, etc. So I took a chance and ordered it since it was pretty dang cheap (around $26). I gotta say it’s pretty awesome and I haven’t ran into any of those issues. It was kinda annoying putting it together, took me about 20 mins but I’m not that smart (: I would just say to make sure you really tighten the wheels and the frame together and you should be good. I used it to repair an exhaust leak I had and it did a great job. I didn’t have to sit there on the cold cement (did this during winter time) and I could roll around underneath the car to get what I needed. I’m kinda chunky and weigh 230 lbs and am about 6 feet tall. When I put it into chair mode, it didn’t bend under my weight or anything like that. When I was creeping around on the floor with it, it rolled fine, and didn’t crack, bend or do anything under my weight. Also to get it from creeper mode to chair mode is pretty easy, and easy to do. Everything just worked perfectly. The only issue I ran into was it didn’t get very close to the floor, so I had to have the jack stands all the way up. But overall, this creeper is amazing ESPECIALLY for the price I paid.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “My first one arrived with a damaged box and missing several parts most likely due to fedex .Jegs eventually made it right after calling. Email support from jegs was USELESS and very disappointing. Once the replacement arrived it went together quickly and is a very solid unit. I’m 6’4” and 300 lbs and it holds me with zero issues. Makes working on my pickup much more pleasant. Should have bought this years ago.”

Customer Review: “Lose, heavy metal framework and components should have been fitted with Styrofoam packing in the cardboard box/carton. This lose packing destroyed the cardboard box/carton – busted carton ends and ripped openings in sides, etc. Clearly, FedEx attempted to re-taped the carton. I’m amazed that parts weren’t missing and equally amazed that the metal work was not bent. The product itself is good… one bolt hole was out of alignment and this caused upright frame to have a slight angle, but it’s still very usable.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I can’t say enough good things for this stool.Assembly: First, assembly is a breeze because it comes mostly assembled. Add the accessory trays, one brace, and four casters (four hex head bolts (Allen wrench included) and four Phillips head screws (supply your own screwdriver), and enjoy! There is a diagram, but not step-by-step instructions. It seems like a fair assumption that anyone who would purchase this product is probably mechanically inclined enough to figure it out.Drawers: The assembled product exceeds all expectations. The drawers are heavy-duty, open smoothly, but do not fly open easily.Accessory trays: The accessory trays are bolted to the frame during assembly. They are a sturdy, thick, plastic One accessory tray is shallow enough to hold several hand tools for quick access. The second tray is divided into three sections, which is perfect for three spray cans or spray bottles. The partitions can be removed to make an open tray (like the other side) or change the width of a couple of the partitions.Seat: The seat is a firm, dense foam covered in what appears to be vinyl. I don’t expect it to flatten over time, and the height is higher than many workshop stools that I have used (which makes it easier to get on and off).Wheels/casters: The wheel-caster set up seems to be a high quality. They roll smoothly across multiple surfaces. In summary, this stool is worth every penny and will be a trusted tool for many years in my garage.”

Customer Review: “I was looking for the perfect father’s day gift for my Dad. He is always working on his classic cars or fixing someone’s car for them. He is a very big guy and has a tendency to wear things out quickly.I took a lot of time looking at these and reading weight capacity and reviews. I also wanted one that rolls around well after my husband had bought one of a different brand he disliked for that reason. It must be a comment issue because many of the reviews for this mentioned how well this one moves around. So I went with this because it seemed people really liked it and it’s quality. My Dad absolutely loved it! He raved about what nice quality it is and the first thing he said was how well it moves around. Lol He said even when he is sitting in one of his fold out chairs taking a break it makes the perfect foot stool too! He loved the drawers and stuff to have his tools close at hand and said he wished he had it a day earlier for a brake job he did.My Dad is one of those guys that has everything and is so hard to shop for and if he dislikes something it’s easy to tell. It’s rare I see him this excited about how great something is. I’m so incredibly happy to have found him something that he loved so much that is of such nice quality. When my husband saw it he was jealous so I forsee buying another in the near future. Lol”

Complete Buying Guide for Topside Creepers

Essential Factors We Consider

When you’re looking for the best topside creeper, there are a few key things to keep in mind to make sure you get the right tool for your specific needs. First, consider the height adjustability. Vehicles vary greatly in height, from compact cars to lifted trucks, so a creeper with a good range of adjustment is crucial. You want to be able to comfortably position yourself over the engine bay without straining.

Next, think about stability and weight capacity. A good automotive creeper should feel rock-solid when you’re on it, preventing any wobbling or tipping. Check the stated weight capacity to ensure it can safely support you and any tools you might have. Materials also play a big role here; heavy-duty steel frames are often preferred for their durability. Speaking of durability, you might also want to invest in a reliable automotive scan tool to diagnose issues accurately before you even start wrenching.

Comfort is another huge factor. Since you’ll likely be spending a fair amount of time on your creeper, adequate padding is essential. Look for high-density foam or thick upholstered cushions that provide good support without compressing too much. Finally, consider maneuverability and storage. Swivel casters are a must for easy movement around the vehicle, and if garage space is limited, a foldable or compact design can be a real lifesaver.

Budget Planning

Investing in a quality topside creeper is an investment in your comfort and efficiency in the garage. Prices can vary quite a bit, from more budget-friendly options around $150-$200 to professional-grade models costing $300 or more. While it might be tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that durability, stability, and comfort often come with a slightly higher price tag. Think about how frequently you’ll use the creeper and the types of vehicles you’ll be working on.

A good rule of thumb is to set a realistic budget that balances cost with the features you need. Sometimes, spending a little more upfront for a sturdier build and better adjustability can save you money (and back pain) in the long run. Don’t forget to factor in potential shipping costs, especially for larger items. Pair your creeper with other essential car accessories like a good portable jump starter for a fully equipped workshop.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best topside creeper is all about finding the right balance of features that suit your specific needs and workspace. It’s not just a luxury; it’s a practical tool that can significantly improve your efficiency and reduce physical strain during automotive repairs. By focusing on adjustability, stability, comfort, and ease of storage, you can make an informed decision that will serve you well for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a topside creeper used for?

A: A topside creeper is used to provide comfortable and stable access to the engine compartment of a vehicle from above. It allows mechanics and DIYers to lean over the engine without straining their back or neck, making tasks like spark plug changes, belt replacements, or fluid checks much easier, especially on taller vehicles like trucks and SUVs.

Q: How do topside creepers differ from traditional creepers?

A: Traditional creepers are designed for working underneath a vehicle, allowing you to lie flat and roll around. Topside creepers, on the other hand, are tall, stand-alone structures that allow you to lean over the top of the engine bay. They typically have a padded chest or stomach support and adjustable height, making them ideal for under-hood work.

Q: Are topside creepers stable on all surfaces?

A: Most topside creepers are designed with a wide, stable base and often include locking swivel casters for security. While they are generally stable on flat, even garage floors, uneven or sloped surfaces can compromise their stability. Always ensure the wheels are locked and the creeper is on a level surface before leaning on it. This stability is similar to how a good portable jump starter provides reliable power even in varied conditions.

Q: Can I use a topside creeper for all vehicle types?

A: Many topside creepers are highly adjustable in height, making them suitable for a wide range of vehicles, from standard cars to lifted trucks and SUVs. However, some very low-profile sports cars or exceptionally tall vehicles might be outside the comfortable or safe operating range of certain models. Always check the creeper’s specified height adjustment range against your vehicle’s height.

Q: How do I maintain my topside creeper?

A: Maintenance for a topside creeper is relatively simple. Regularly check all bolts and fasteners to ensure they are tight. Keep the casters clean and free of debris to ensure smooth rolling. Wipe down the padded surfaces with a damp cloth to remove grease and dirt, and store the creeper in a dry place to prevent rust on metal components. If it’s foldable, ensure the folding mechanisms are clean and operate smoothly.

Choosing the right topside creeper can significantly improve your comfort and efficiency when working on vehicles. By considering factors like adjustability, stability, comfort, and storage, you can find a model that perfectly fits your needs. Don’t let back pain sideline your automotive projects – invest in one of these fantastic tools and make your garage work a whole lot easier. Happy wrenching!
