Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Im just a guy with a pro press thats hates sweating copper. Im not a plumber, but this tool has enabled me to make so many home repairs I thought was out of my reach and comfort zone. I recently used the tool to relocate an Ice maker water line to a different area. I had to work in a crawl space under the house and the unit is light enough to handle one handed in really small spaces and the presses come out perfect every time. This unit is good value for money as compared to the Milwaukee for DIY guys/gals. Before I bought this I did purchase a manual press tool off amazon, it was clunky to use and never gave good feedback as to when the press was done, however with this unit you always know when its done because the unit automatically let go of the crimp.

Customer Review: This will be an excellent tool for experienced plumber to DIY person. I have been doing plumbing over 18 years now and I can say this thing is a life saver. If you want to marry anyone it should be this tool. I have always chosen to solder copper joints its all I knew. It is also the strongest and best connection. However with soldering you have to correctly clean the pipe, correctly heat up the fitting, handle the torch with open flame (very difficult in tight spaces and fire hazard, near impossible to solder with water still running etc. Now don’t get me wrong i have always gotten the job done no matter how difficult, but soldering is a skill that takes alot more expertise . Then I started hearing about propress so I bought the manual propress tool for about $100 bucks. It does work and if you are on a budget and only doing couple jobs a year that would be best for you. However doing water tanks, boilers, washing machine set up, faucets kitchen and bath etc, using propress just made life 10x easier. I still solder many connections where space and time allows but its about 60/40 now with propress. It take me 2-3 minutes to replace a water shutoff valve with propress. it cane take even 15 or more with soldering. I can also take just 3 tools to a job, this ridgid propress machine, a deburing tool (ridgid as well), and the auto cutter. Cut debur and the press and done. If I was going to solder- I would need my gas tank, torch head, flexible extention house(optional I use this so i dont have to hold the tank great for tight spaces), thinning flaux, solder, auto cutter, deburing too, and sponge to wipe off excess flaux off the pipe. I lso would need to make sure to remove anything that might catch a flame , even the fitting you have to be careful not to over heat. So all in all I’m using propress 40% more. Now for the tool it self-ProLight weight- you can literally hold it in one hand. it weights as much as say and impact drill.the heads are easy to change out. takes less than a minute and holds securlyKit includes 1/2 and 3/4 attachment (which is all you need 90% of the time).kit includes a carrying case to keep everything in one place (bonus you can leave the last attachment you used on. so when you done put tool with attachment back in the case.led light for extra lightingto press a fitting you just attach and press a buttonvery small tool and clapping a fitting is easier than the manual tools because those require more clearance to go 360 degree around the fitting while this one only need about 180 degress to be able to get around the fitting.recommended for under sinks, basements, water tanks, (indoor use only), tight spaces, commecial application so you wont need fire permits, DIY, landlords, handymen, and professionals.PRICE- its one of the cheapest professional quality press tools but I also have this as a con because well it is still alot to shell out on a tool.Con,the case is flimsy and feels cheapfor the price the pex fitting should be included atleast 1.I forget after how many thousand pressing you are supposed to get it recalibrated. (however honestly if used it that much and didn’t save or make enough to pay for this 100x over you did something wrong.PRICE- its worth it but I can buy a used car for this price

Complete Buying Guide for Best Pro Press Tools – Electric Pipe Crimping Tool

Choosing the right electric pipe crimping tool can significantly impact your efficiency and the quality of your plumbing or HVAC work. It’s an investment, so it’s wise to consider several factors before making your final decision. Let’s break down what matters most.

Essential Factors We Consider

When evaluating the best pro press tools, we look at performance, versatility, and ergonomics. Key considerations include the output force of the tool, measured in kilonewtons (KN), which dictates the maximum pipe size and material it can crimp. A higher force usually means greater capacity. The jaw capacity itself is crucial – ensure the tool supports the pipe diameters you regularly work with. Most tools come with common sizes, but some offer greater range. Consider the power source: cordless tools offer unmatched portability, while corded models provide continuous power without battery concerns. Manual hydraulic tools are a budget-friendly option, though they require more physical effort.

Tool size and weight are important, especially if you’re working in tight spaces or overhead. A lighter, more compact tool will reduce fatigue. Jaw compatibility is also vital; some brands have proprietary jaws, while others offer more universal options. Finally, look for features like automatic crimping cycles that release when a crimp is complete, and robust safety mechanisms to prevent accidental operation.

Budget Planning

The price range for electric pipe crimping tools can vary widely, from a few hundred dollars for manual hydraulic options to several thousands for high-end cordless models with multiple jaws and advanced features. When budgeting, don’t just consider the tool’s initial cost. Factor in the price of additional jaws you might need, replacement batteries, and any future maintenance or calibration requirements. For occasional DIY use, a manual tool might suffice, but for professionals, the speed and reliability of an electric tool often justify the higher investment, paying for itself in saved labor time.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the “best” electric pipe crimping tool depends on your specific needs, frequency of use, and budget. For heavy-duty professional use, investing in a powerful, durable, and versatile tool from a reputable brand like Ridgid or Milwaukee is a wise choice. For occasional use or specialized tasks in cramped conditions, a compact mini tool or a reliable manual hydraulic option might be more appropriate. Prioritizing performance, jaw capacity, and ease of use will lead you to a tool that not only gets the job done but does it efficiently and reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a pro press tool and how does it work?

A: A pro press tool, or electric pipe crimping tool, creates secure, watertight connections on pipes (typically copper, PEX, or stainless steel) by mechanically crimping a fitting onto the pipe. It uses powerful jaws to apply immense force, permanently deforming the fitting around the pipe without the need for heat or solder. This process is much faster and often safer than traditional joining methods.

Q: Why should I use an electric pipe crimping tool instead of soldering?

A: Electric pipe crimping offers several advantages over soldering. It’s significantly faster, with connections made in seconds. There’s no open flame, reducing fire hazards and eliminating the need for fire permits in some commercial settings. This also means no toxic fumes, less clean-up, and the ability to work on wet lines. The connections are also highly consistent and reliable, minimizing the chance of leaks.

Q: What pipe materials can these tools crimp?

A: The most common materials crimped by pro press tools are copper, PEX, and stainless steel. However, it’s crucial to use the correct press jaws designed specifically for the material and brand of fitting you are using. Always check the tool’s specifications and the fitting manufacturer’s guidelines for compatibility.

Q: How do I choose the right jaw size for my electric pipe crimping tool?

A: Choosing the right jaw size is straightforward: it must match the nominal diameter of the pipe you are working with (e.g., 1/2-inch pipe requires a 1/2-inch jaw). Most electric pipe crimping tools come with a few common jaw sizes or have kits available with various options. Ensure your chosen tool can accommodate all the pipe sizes relevant to your projects.

Q: Are electric pipe crimping tools worth the investment for DIYers?

A: For a one-off small repair, perhaps not, due to the high initial cost. However, if you plan to undertake multiple plumbing projects, significant renovations, or frequent repairs, a pro press tool can be a fantastic investment. The time saved, the reduction in labor, the elimination of open flames, and the professional, leak-free results can quickly justify the expense, especially for tools like the mini press or manual hydraulic options.

Choosing the right electric pipe crimping tool is a decision that impacts the efficiency, safety, and quality of your work. Whether you’re a seasoned professional tackling complex installations or a dedicated DIYer upgrading your home’s plumbing, these tools offer a modern, reliable, and incredibly fast alternative to traditional methods.
