Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I was a little dubious after reading the negative responses about the latches, but went ahead and ordered. I agree the latches on the lid are not the sturdiest, but there are handles on the ends of the box that you can use to pick up the unit and the latches only need to close the lid. I run a lawn mower repair shop and our trailer sits outside, so didn’t want a winch to set out in the weather all the time. I have used it several times to load large zero turn units. Works great. I use one of the included straps to wrap around the tongue of the trailer and attach to the unit with the included clevis pins. I run the winch rope through the pulley and back to the front of the trailer. I attach the second strap to the unit and to the hook on the pulley. I carry a jump pack to try to jump start the mower and if that doesn’t work, power the winch with it to pull the mower onto the trailer. Pulls very heavy units on the trailer easily.”

Customer Review: “I have a 580 lb. horse drawn carriage that I pull up ramps into a large van. I tried at least 4 of those “portable winches” that cost from $60 to $100. Even though these are rated at 2000 pounds and should exceed the requirements, in my experience, they were fragile and often broke after just a few pulls. The last one regurgitated some of its internal parts before going into whine mode that meant no pulling ever again.iThis is not ok. I need something more dependable. And less likely to cause bleedy hands from frayed wires. This Superwinch Winch2Go is rated at 4000 lbs pull. and has the cable (not wires). I have tried it out several times and am very pleased with how well it does its job. A small problem was the power leads were too short to reach my battery. So I purchased a heavy duty jumper cable (4 AWG) and lengthened them with that.Even though I forgot to wear the supplied gloves, it was a minor joy to not hurt my hands with this cable. Given the choice, I very much recommend this over the wire winches. The configuration of the box lended itself well to my anchoring requirements. I am pleased with the quality of everything in this well-thought-out winch. Now I don’t worry about being in the wilderness and being unable to load my carriage.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I’ve been running the Smittybilt XRC-9.5K Gen2 for a few months, and it’s been a solid performer. The 6.6 hp motor and 3-stage gear system pull hard and steady β€” no issues recovering my Jeep from some deep mud. Installation was straightforward, and the IP67 waterproof rating holds up in rain and creek crossings. It’s heavy, and the steel cable adds even more weight, but that’s the trade-off for durability. The remote plug feels a bit loose, so I added some dielectric grease for peace of mind. For the price, you can’t beat it β€” great performance, solid build, and good warranty coverage. Perfect for weekend off-roaders who want reliability without spending a fortune.”

Customer Review: “I am rating this Winch a 5 Star because it is a BEAST, and Does a WONDERFUL job. However there are several things that were not good and had to be overcome to get it to that point. This of course was annoying. The first issue was I got the Winch in and Mounted it to my 2500 Chevy Silverado Diesel. The Winch was SO big I had to make some modifications to the Winch Cradle I got from Tuff Stuff to make it fit the Curt 31042 Front trailer hitch.2nd after I did 5 pulls with the Winch it just completely quit and would never work again. Now I did do four of those five pulls back to back. However that should NOT have been enough to kill it, but it did. So I told Amazon and they promptly sent me a new one that arrived within 2 days, which was nice. No questions were asked. I have used the new one for 10 pulls and it is VERY strong and works Amazing!!3rd Alot of the fastener hardware is cheap Chinese screws that have the head strip out easily if you don’t press it hard as an 800 lb. Gorilla can.I recommend replacing ALL fasteners with American made Stainless Steel equivalents.4th they sent the Wrong Mounting bracket so I could not Mount the Module on the left side of the unit like I had preferred to do. Going to call SmittyBilt and see if they will send me the correct bracket.5th So since the side mount Bracket did not have the correct fitment I had to use the center mount method. Well once installed the module, it would slide from side to side on the cross members. So I had to take it off and bend the Bracket so when mounted it would be tight and could not move.A hassle for sure but not that big of a deal.6th the second winch that came in had a remote that would randomly bump the line back out into Spool out mode. So While I would try to wind it up the line would just start coming back out. I corrected this by taking the first Winch’es Remote and sending back the second Winch’es remote with the defective Winch. The Winch has Not had that problem at all since trading out remotes.7th on both Units You have to bump the Remote in or out sometimes to get the clutch to engage or disengage. (Not to big of a deal just a little Quirky)8th Finally the Free Spool is a little difficult. I am 6′-4″ and a pretty strong guy, However I have to really put the Muscle into it and really lean all my weight into pulling the line to get it off the drum.I know that was alot, but if you can get past these quirks as I did the Winch is actually quite Outstanding. The main thing is I think SmittyBilt REALLY needs to up their game on the Quality control department, as well as upgrading ALL fastener hardware.I have loaded vehicles onto trailers, pulled up stumps and destroyed a mobile home with this Winch. it is Very Stout.I will come back and give it a 6 month review when that time comes.IF this unit ends up dying in that time…. I will get it fixed, sell it, and buy the Most expensive Warn I can find.I hope it Will not come to that though….. and by all the other reviews I have seen…. I dont think it will.I say Give this Winch a try You Might end up liking it.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Portable Electric Winches

Essential Factors We Consider

Choosing the best portable electric winch involves more than just picking the one with the highest pulling capacity. You need to consider several key factors to ensure it meets your specific needs and offers the best value. First and foremost is Pulling Capacity: always choose a winch with a rating significantly higher than the weight you intend to pull, ideally 1.5 to 2 times the gross vehicle weight. Next, think about the Rope Type. Steel cable is robust and budget-friendly but heavier and can fray. Synthetic rope is lighter, stronger, and safer but generally more expensive. Motor Type and Power (HP and voltage) dictate speed and efficiency. A permanent magnet motor is great for intermittent use, while series-wound motors are better for heavier, prolonged pulling.

Portability is, of course, a crucial aspect of any portable electric winch. Consider the unit’s weight, size, and whether it comes with a carrying case or integrated handles. If you’re often away from a vehicle’s 12V power source, a cordless model like the WARN PullzAll might be ideal, sometimes even paired with a portable jump starter for extended power. Control options, such as wired or wireless remotes, affect convenience and safety. Finally, look at Durability and Weather Resistance, especially if you plan to use it in harsh environments. Features like IP ratings indicate how well the winch can withstand dust and water, protecting your investment. A good winch is truly one of the most practical car accessories for any off-road enthusiast.

Budget Planning

When budgeting for a portable electric winch, remember that price often correlates with pulling capacity, motor type, and included features. Entry-level models with lower capacities can be found for a few hundred dollars, suitable for light utility work or smaller ATVs. Mid-range winches, offering capacities from 3,000 to 6,000 lbs, provide a good balance of power and affordability for most recreational users and will typically cost more. High-capacity winches (8,000 lbs and above) designed for heavy vehicle recovery will be the most expensive but offer unparalleled strength. Don’t forget to factor in essential accessories like tree saver straps, snatch blocks, and recovery kits, which are vital for safe operation. Sometimes, you’ll see these mounted to vehicles along with items like truck bed covers, becoming part of a complete utility setup.

Final Thoughts

Investing in a high-quality portable electric winch is an investment in peace of mind. Whether you’re an avid off-roader, a landowner, or someone who occasionally needs to move heavy objects, the right winch can make demanding tasks manageable. By carefully considering your needs, understanding the key features, and setting a realistic budget, you’ll be well-equipped to choose a winch that serves you reliably for years to come. Remember, safety first! Always use your winch responsibly and with proper recovery techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does “portable” mean for an electric winch?

A: For an electric winch, “portable” typically means it’s not permanently mounted to a vehicle or fixed structure. It often comes in a self-contained unit that can be easily moved, stored, and attached to different anchor points or vehicles as needed. These winches usually connect to a 12V vehicle battery or, in some cases, have their own internal battery for cordless operation.

Q: How do I determine the right pulling capacity for my needs?

A: A good rule of thumb is to choose a portable electric winch with a pulling capacity that is at least 1.5 times the gross weight of the vehicle or object you intend to pull. For example, if your vehicle weighs 5,000 lbs, you should look for a winch with at least a 7,500 lb capacity. This safety margin accounts for stuck conditions, inclines, and other resistance factors.

Q: Is steel cable or synthetic rope better for a portable electric winch?

A: Both have pros and cons. Steel cable is typically more affordable, very durable against abrasion, and resistant to heat. However, it’s heavier, can develop sharp burrs, and stores more kinetic energy, making it potentially more dangerous if it breaks. Synthetic rope is lighter, stronger, floats in water, is easier to handle, and stores less kinetic energy, making it safer if it snaps. It’s usually more expensive and more susceptible to UV damage and abrasion.

Q: Can I use a portable electric winch with a regular car battery?

A: Most 12V portable electric winches are designed to connect directly to a vehicle’s battery. It’s crucial that the battery is in good condition and capable of providing the necessary amperage for the winch to operate effectively. For heavier pulls, it’s recommended to have the vehicle running to ensure maximum power output and to prevent draining the battery.

Q: What essential accessories should I have for my portable electric winch?

A: Key accessories for safe and effective winching include a tree saver strap (to protect trees when used as anchor points), d-shackles (for secure connections), a snatch block (to double your pulling power or change direction), and recovery gloves to protect your hands. A complete recovery kit often bundles these items together, providing all you need for a successful pull.

Choosing the best portable electric winch can significantly enhance your outdoor adventures, property management, or emergency preparedness.
