Customer Reviews

Customer Review: First of all, these tools are quality tools in looks and most important, in functions. By that I mean, it has the most used sizes in both box and open end wrenches as well as sockets and ratchets. A lot of tool sets have a high number of “tools” but in reality they are counting such things as individual zip ties and dime a dozen screwdriver bits! I bought this set for the actual tools not the gimmicks that other tool set providers include as “tools”! If I want a couple dozen different screwdriver bits I will buy them separately. Yes, there are screwdriver bits in this set but only the ones that are mostly used. Also, there are not a couple dozen zip ties in this set to up the “tool count”! Overall, in my opinion, this is the best combination of wrenches and sockets for a good price that I need for my workshop!

Customer Review: The sockets for this set are awesome. Super sturdy, I’ve used with impact guns many times and have never had one break or deform. The ratchets aren’t high quality however very few teeth and can fall apart easily.2025 edit. I decided to add a fifth star to this because despite the ratchets not being great, I have used the sockets and wrenches in the mechanical field for years and I’ve never had one crack. I’ve not been kind to these sockets and while I’ve seen other people at work have sockets from tool trucks crack and break none of mine have even under the same strain.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This a great set, especially for the price. I got the 230 piece for half price. The case fits easily with the other Craftsman Verastack containers. The ratchets are slimmer as described and feel good in the hand. However, what is an already good set could be better. First, the drawers slide but are not on rollers like other Verastack containers. Rollers would be nice. Second, the drawers are not interchangeable, meaning you cannot rearrange them top to bottom. I would prefer to put the 3/8 on top since I use that size the most. Third, the casing is OK, but it would have been nice if they figured out a way for you to maximize the space. The drawers use built in plastic pegs, etc. and there is a ton of dead space between everything. I would prefer this to have been made so we can rearrange the tools in the drawers to maximize the space–perhaps removable foam. Finally, the regular wrenches are not very good. They are smooth and look nice, but they suffer from a massive crab claw on the open end and the box end is bigger when compared to old-school USA-made 12 pt raised panel wrenches and even the relatively newer China-made 6 pt raised panel wrenches. I have uploaded a photo so you can see. In both photos, the wrench from this set is on the left, the Chinese made 6 pt raised panel wrench is in the center, and the O.G. USA-made raised panel wrench is on the right. That said, this was a a very good deal for the price. If you are looking for non-professional use tools or are a professional on a budget, these are a good buy. I have been working on cars for 30 years–including major repairs–and have used nothing but budget brands and unbranded stuff. Craftsman are literally some of the “nicest” tools I own, and guess what, the cars get fixed just the same but for A LOT less money in tools. Also, you also cannot beat the Craftsman warranty. I have literally taken cracked 50-year old Craftsman sockets to Ace and Lowes and got a replacement with no questions asked just the way Sears once did it.

Customer Review: With an upcoming hub/bearing assembly swap on 3 of the 4 wheels and new brakes on all four, I needed a new ratchet as my 28-year-old Craftsman 3/8″ ratchet suffered a couple of rounded off teeth after years of use and abuse. Shopping around just for a ratchet, and wanting to also buy a 1/2″ ratchet, the prices pushed me to start looking at larger/bundled kits. While I didn’t really need all of the sockets and wrenches included in this kit, I couldn’t beat the price, especially with the price reduction on this kit, which by the way is still full price at Lowes. I couldn’t be happier with this kit, and it should well-serve any weekend warrior mechanic for years to come, as long as you don’t abuse the tools. I added some adapters to the kit to allow use of the 1/2″ drive with some of the 3/8″ sockets, as the length of the 1/2″ drive provides a little more leverage, finding that sweet spot when the 3/8″ drive isn’t enough and my 18″ breaker bar is too much/doesn’t fit in the tight spot. The plastic case, with the removeable trays/drawers keeps everything neat and tidy, easily identifying when something is missing. With my aging eyes, it was tough to see the raised numbering to identify the socket size, but this is easily addressed by coloring the raised numbering with a black Sharpie to make them contrast against the rest of the red tray. It was nice how the trays can be removed and stacked on top of the case for easy access. As mentioned above, I added adapters, but I also added a 6″ 3/8″ drive extension as the included extensions were too short to access the mounting bolts for the brake calipers and hub/bearing assemblies on my vehicle. The layout of the trays/drawers leaves plenty of space for these additions and probably a bit more. This kit paired with the Craftsman 1/2″ impact driver, and the added adapters and extension, I was able to tackle the job easily and save myself a ton of money instead of paying the dealership or some other garage to do this. The only thing needed for the job that wasn’t in this kit was a 32mm socket to remove the axel nuts, thankfully I was able to borrow one from a friend. Overall, this is a great kit and I highly recommend it, especially if it is $90 below regular price.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Mechanics Tool Set

Choosing the best mechanics tool set can feel like a big decision, especially with so many options out there. It’s not just about the number of pieces; it’s about quality, utility, and how well the set meets your specific needs. Here’s what we consider essential when evaluating these valuable kits.

Essential Factors We Consider

When we look at mechanics tool sets, several key factors come into play. First, the piece count is often the first thing people notice, but it’s important to differentiate between actual usable tools and filler items. A smaller set with high-quality, frequently used tools is often better than a large set with many obscure bits. Next, consider the drive sizes included. Most sets will feature 1/4″, 3/8″, and sometimes 1/2″ drives. Each is suited for different tasks: 1/4″ for delicate or small fasteners, 3/8″ for most general automotive work, and 1/2″ for heavy-duty applications like lug nuts or suspension components. Ensuring you have both SAE (Standard American English) and Metric sizes is non-negotiable for modern vehicles, which often use a mix of both. The quality of materials, such as chrome vanadium steel, dictates the durability and longevity of your tools. A good set will resist corrosion and stand up to significant torque. Lastly, don’t overlook the storage case. A well-designed case keeps your tools organized, protected, and easy to transport, saving you time and frustration during a project. And speaking of automotive work, having a reliable
automotive scan tool can really complement your physical tool set for diagnostics.

Budget Planning

Your budget plays a significant role in your decision. Entry-level mechanics tool sets are great for occasional DIYers and light repairs, offering decent quality at an affordable price. Mid-range sets provide a better balance of quality and comprehensive features, suitable for regular use and more involved projects. Professional-grade sets, while more expensive, offer superior durability, precision, and often lifetime warranties, making them a worthwhile investment for those who use their tools daily. Remember, investing in a slightly more expensive, higher-quality set can save you money in the long run by preventing tool breakage and avoiding the need for frequent replacements. When you’re outfitting your garage, consider other essentials too, such as the
best portable jump starter to ensure you’re always prepared for emergencies.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best mechanics tool set for you will depend on your specific needs, the types of projects you tackle, and your budget. Prioritize sets that offer a good balance of essential tools, durable construction, and practical storage. Don’t hesitate to invest in quality, as good tools are an extension of your own capability and can truly elevate your work. With the right set in hand, you’ll be ready to face any mechanical challenge with confidence and efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I look for in a mechanics tool set for a beginner?

A: For beginners, focus on a set that includes common SAE and Metric sockets (1/4″ and 3/8″ drive), a few wrenches, and a basic screwdriver set. Look for good reviews on durability and a sturdy case. Around 100-150 pieces is often a great starting point without being overwhelming.

Q: Are all tools in a “piece count” equally useful?

A: Not necessarily. Some manufacturers may inflate the piece count by including many screwdriver bits, hex keys, or small accessories. While useful, prioritize sets that have a solid core of sockets, ratchets, and wrenches in varying sizes, as these are the backbone of any mechanics tool set.

Q: What’s the difference between 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ drive sizes?

A: These numbers refer to the size of the square drive on the ratchet and socket. 1/4″ drive is for smaller, more delicate tasks and fasteners with lower torque. 3/8″ drive is the most versatile and common for general automotive and household repairs. 1/2″ drive is for larger fasteners and higher torque applications, such as lug nuts or suspension work. Many comprehensive sets include all three to ensure versatility for
car accessories or serious repairs.

Q: How important is the ratchet tooth count?

A: The tooth count on a ratchet determines its arc swing, which is the amount of movement needed to engage the next tooth. A higher tooth count (e.g., 72 or 120) means a smaller arc swing, allowing you to turn fasteners in tighter spaces with less movement. This is crucial for working in confined engine bays or other restricted areas.

Q: Should I choose a set with a blow-molded case or a metal toolbox?

A: Blow-molded cases are lightweight, portable, and often feature custom-molded spots for each tool, making organization easy. Metal toolboxes offer superior durability and security but are heavier and often require additional organization within drawers. Your choice depends on whether portability and quick access or maximum protection and longevity are your priority.

There you have it – a comprehensive look at some of the best mechanics tool set options available today. We’ve explored everything from budget-friendly choices to extensive professional kits, highlighting their unique strengths and ideal uses. Remember, the right tool for the job makes all the difference, not just in efficiency but also in the quality of your work. Consider your specific needs, the types of projects you’ll be undertaking, and your budget to make the most informed decision. Invest in a quality set, and you’ll equip yourself for countless successful repairs and projects for years to come. Happy wrenching!
