Customer Review: “The Yardbird landed on my porch unlike other pluckers that are only delivered curbside with a truck or lift gate.The box looked like it had been through a war but the product was in good condition. There was a small ding in the fan cover on the motor so I contacted Yardird and they sent a replacement within two days. The unit functioned fine without the new part but when you spend your hard earned dough on an item you want it to look great as well. The Yardbird customer service is excellent. They answer the phone and speak English without an accent.The unit has some assembly required however for hundreds of dollars less than any other unit I was wiling to use a couple of wrenches to put it together. The instructions are well done and obviously written by someone that knows the English language. The manual contains assembly instructions, warnings, and even a parts page that shows all of the replacement parts that one could order if there was an issue. I was pleasantly surprised that there is a one year warranty published in the manual and there is a serial number on the manual cover that matches the serial number on the machine. I found this useful while calling customer service.Like many others I considered building a plucker. I looked at the detailed lists of parts that others have published to build their own. Just the materials ranged from $450 – $750. Also, you needed to be a machinist, a carpenter, and dabble at being an electrician to get it all together. To put this in perspective I researched purchasing a 1.5 H.P. washdown grade motor and the motor cost as much as this entire machine.This unit is a performer. With 1.5 H.P. and no belt slippage this thing can easily handled two seven pound birds. It’s advertised rating is two eight pound birds and I believe that it can handle it. It is advertised as completely plucking two birds in 15 seconds. This is also accurate. If you are familiar with plucking by hand or with one of those external drum pluckers that throws the feathers everywhere this product will speed up the operation substantially.The secret is in the scald just as all other plucker users and reviewers have mentioned. When you are processing and forget to turn the scalder burner off you will get a couple of chickens with ripped skin. I also had a couple of birds with broken knee joints however the next step is to cut the foot off at the knee so this is not a deal breaker.The drive train is completely sealed and maintenance free (says the manual). We will see if it stands the test of time but it appears to be very solid especially in the drive train (motor, gearbox, and output shaft).After butchering the machine can be cleaned by releasing the latches on the tub. There is a nifty safety switch that does not allow the machine to operate without the stainless tub in place.My only complaint is that the on/off switch is a bit hidden from sight. Once a few birds are processed finding the switch is second nature but it takes some practice.All in all this product works and does exactly what is advertised. I would recommend this to a friend.”

Customer Review: “We bought this to process chickens on our homestead. It was pretty easy to assemble. It is pretty heavy but has wheels to roll it where it needs to go. To be honest, a plucker is not a cheap item but it is so nice to have. It does the job well. It does not come apart for cleaning but we found it drains pretty good. There is just a shoot down at the bottom where all the feathers come out. I just gathered them up and put them in the compost. Glad we have it and look forward to more processing of our homegrown meat.”

Customer Review: “We processed 150 chickens this year using this plucker. Overall the plucker did a great job, I only have a few small complaints and thoughts1. It can handle 2 pretty good sized birds without struggling. In fact, it seemed to perform better in some ways with 2 carcasses bouncing around inside the drum. With only one carcass, the bird would occasionally get stuck in one spot with the machine still running, which doesn’t remove any additional feathers and risks tearing the skin. It is not a big deal at all to simply poke the chicken with your hand to get it moving again, but worth mentioning.2. The motor will only turn on if you have attached the included contact switch to the bottom of the drum. We have had no issues yet, but I have noticed the cord tends to get beat on a little. Admittedly I don’t treat it like a delicate flower, but I do wish the cord was a little more robust, or out of the way.3. We processed both the standard Cornish X, and a slower growing Red Ranger variety. The plucker cleaned our Cornish Cross beautifully, but it struggled a little with the Red Rangers. Their feathers were denser and longer, and tended to jam up the drum unless we were vigilant about running water through every couple of birds. The plucker also tends to leave feathers on the tail and “elbow” in both bird varieties. I think that is probably normal for a non-commercial machine, so just be prepared do a tiny bit of post-pluck inspection. The quality of the plucking also improved exponentially as we learned how to scald more effectively.4. The wheels tend to fall off. I lost one hitch pin and the other wheel shook loose while I was trying to replace the first. Irritating, but only a problem when moving the machine.I want to note that these are all VERY minor complaints. Overall I am very satisfied with this plucker and would happily recommend it to just about everyone. It should be noted that we really put it to the test with 150 birds, more than half of them Red Rangers with very dense feathers. We were also first-timers to the whole process in general. We were able to kill 50 chickens on the final day, and the plucker was absolutely not holding us back. For anyone processing a flock, this will absolutely get the job done.”

But, it worked flawlessly to pluck 15 birds today. Super fast, maybe 30 seconds per bird, and it plucked them clean! No bruising, no damage to the meat. Absolutely recommend this product! I was waiting to see how processing day went, and with these results, I’ll be doing 40 birds next year. Very glad I didn’t rent a plucker!”

Customer Review: “I really can’t use it. I didn’t know that it would tear up the chicken. I’ve tried several times with different varieties of chicken , tried one chicken, tried two chickens but every time my chickens would be damaged. I’ve tried just really really quick like 30 seconds just so my chicken would not be all beaten up but then the feathers would still be there and I still have to pluck by hand. Also so hard to clean inside the feathers get stuck under the rubber fingers and I’ve tried super water spray and also pulling tugging feathers under every rubber fingers but NO way the feathers would come out! So it can not be featherless after cleaning. One other problem I saw is a rust circle appearing inside the drum already and we’ve only used the machine twice but only like 4 chickens because my chickens got beat up broken wings, broken head, cracked skull, neck and chest torn out, feet broken off and this machine is like brand new under 30 days so I’m thinking about returning it.”
